How many hours a day do I need to wear my aligners?
One of the most attractive features of Invisalign braces – they are called aligners – is that they are removable. Unlike traditional wire braces, you can remove your aligner during meal times for eating, brushing and flossing. That means you won’t have to avoid certain types of food or clean with caution for fear of loosening or damaging the braces. However, for optimum results, you'll need to keep your aligners on for 22 hours or more per day.
Do I need to brush my teeth after every meal?
Let’s just say a travel toothbrush will become indispensible. You will need to maintain proper oral hygiene to reduce the risk of infections or decay throughout the treatment period. Brushing and flossing needs to be thorough, in order to remove food debris trapped in the crevices and clean those areas where there is contact between teeth and aligners. That’s a lot of brushing so it may be wise to invest in a few travel toothbrushes.
Are the aligners uncomfortable?
You might experience mild discomfort wearing your aligners, but many people don't experience any discomfort at all. Discomfort usually occurs when switching to a new set of aligners and usually subsides within a few days. The cause is the gentle pressure needed to realign the teeth. The good news is, it will subside as your teeth begin to shift and straighten.
Will wearing Invisalign affect my eating habits?
Wearing aligners will force you to eat within allotted meal times and avoid snacking in-between, which means snacking is curtailed. The hassle of removing the aligner just to eat some chips or sweets might prevent your intake of those extra calories. Who knows, the bathroom scale may start to tip in your favor!
Are aligners really invisible?
For all intents and purposes they are and people won’t really notice them covering your teeth, even when they're looking directly at you. Compared to traditional metal braces, the clear appearance is superior at disguising the fact you're wearing braces.
